Call PM Trudeau in support of voting reform

It's been one year since the Liberals won a majority government with only 39% of the popular vote. They promised in their platform that they would replace first-past-the-post by the next election and make every vote count.

However, recent comments from Prime Minister Trudeau in Le Devoir indicate they may be thinking about backing away from their promise. We're expecting a recommendation from the committee studying voting reform in the near future - but the PM won't even commit to implementing what they recommend.

This is a “trial balloon” - they are testing the waters to see if people will hold them to their promise to “make every vote count.” The Leadnow community organized a strategic voting campaign to defeat Harper so we’d never have to vote strategically again. Together, we need to give the Liberals a powerful reminder that people voted for their promise to change the way we vote - and breaking this promise could cost them support they need in the next election. We need to act fast while they’re listening for the reaction.

Can you call the Prime Minister today and tell him that you care about making every vote count and you want him to keep his promise? If no one picks up, we encourage you to leave a voicemail.

Here’s some information you could include in your message:
  • I am calling because I saw that the Prime Minister made comments to the media today saying that people don’t think voting reform is a priority. I am worried that the Prime Minister won’t keep his promise to replace first-past-the-post, so I want to tell my MP that I do think voting reform is important and I expect the Liberals to keep their word.
  • I specifically support replacing first-past-the-post with proportional representation, because it’s a more fair, inclusive and collaborative way to elect representatives. It will ensure that every vote actually counts.
