This summer we experienced destructive wildfires, deadly heat waves and harmful droughts. The June 2021 heatwave was the deadliest weather event in Canadian history.

Without strong action, the events of this summer could become our new normal. But right now, our provincial “CleanBC” climate plan is woefully inadequate—rather than curbing fossil fuel expansion, it allows for LNG projects and public subsidies to oil and gas.

We have a chance to change that. The BC government is currently rebooting their CleanBC plan, and are making decisions about this in the Cabinet right now. A big wave of pressure calling on them for a bold and ambitious plan could get us one step closer to a climate-safe future.

Dear Cabinet Minister,

The climate emergency is on our doorstep here in BC. This summer we experienced the deadliest weather event in Canadian history with the devastating heatwave.

Our current CleanBC plan does not go far enough: we need an ambitious provincial climate plan that will face the climate emergency head on.

I understand the BC government is launching the next phase of CleanBC soon. I’m asking you, as cabinet minister, to advocate for a bold and ambitious climate plan that reflects the ten action items published in the open letter here:

The open letter is signed by dozens of respected climate and community organizations, several Indigenous groups, and business leaders. Their list of 10 action items center justice, science and community and will inject the CleanBC plan with the urgency we need to tackle the climate crisis.
