Despite grand promises from the Liberal government about ending disability poverty in Canada – which was promised 4 years ago – the Canada Disability Benefit (CDB) was woefully underfunded in Budget 2024.

As it currently stands, the government would only provide a maximum benefit amount of $2,400 per year – just $6.60 per day. And to add insult to injury, restrictive qualifications would leave 1.5 million people with disabilities out of the running for the benefit.

The Liberals are falling far short on their promise to bring people with disabilities out of poverty. This is unacceptable. But, it’s not too late. Budget 2024 will be voted on this week – and MPs will have a chance to decide what becomes a priority – so these numbers aren't final.

If thousands of us email our MPs now calling on them to demand stronger funding for the CDB before Budget 2024 is passed, it could be what tips the scale and forces MPs to fight for stronger funding for the CDB now.

I am writing to advocate for a significant increase in the Canada Disability Benefit. The current funding commitment of $1.6 million over 6 years equates to only a maximum of $200 a month for people with disabilities who qualify for the CDB, just $6.60 a day.

This funding commitment dramatically falls far short of meeting the needs of addressing those affected by the disability poverty crisis in Canada.

Disability comprises 27 per cent of the Canadian population, yet many individuals living with disabilities are facing significant financial barriers that hinder their ability to thrive and have access to basic necessities to live with dignity.

The Liberals have held up the CDB as an historic benefit, but it is currently not enough to meet the promised goal of addressing the disability poverty crisis in Canada.

In advance of Budget 2024 being voted on, I am asking you to demand that the federal government increase the Canada Disability Benefit to at least $1,000 a month, to bring the disability community at least up to the poverty line.

This increase is crucial to beginning to ensure that individuals living with disabilities can have hope to lead fulfilling lives without the constant worry of financial hardship.
