We all want kids back in schools, but safely. COVID numbers are still rising — and evidence suggests that the Omicron variant is finding easier ways to make kids sick. Meanwhile, schools won’t have enough tests to test those exposed to COVID. And parents won't find out about COVID cases in their kid’s class until there’s a 30% absence rate. Dear MPP,

I am your constituent and am writing to express my concern about this coming Monday's reopening plan for Ontario schools. Our province needs a science-based and sustainable plan to make schools safer. Please, I am asking you to direct my concerns to Premier Ford and Minister Lecce.

Experts, educators, unions, students and parents have been clear about what is needed. N95 masks and HEPA filters must be available in all classrooms. There must be widespread and accessible vaccination programs for students and staff along with sufficient rapid antigen testing for all schools. Further, you must reinstate full monitoring and reporting of cases in school. Finally, there must be a sustainable and sufficient plan for staff shortages.

So far, the announced plans do not address these needs in full.

COVID numbers are still rising — and evidence is suggesting that Omicron is infecting kids at a faster rate. We can't take risks here. Forging ahead as is, is putting our kids and education workers at serious risk of COVID-19.  
 
As my representative, I am asking you to pressure Premier Ford and Education Minister Lecce to do the right thing to keep our kids, educators and communities safe.
