In less than 24 hours, fossil fuel executives representing Imperial, Cenovus, Enbridge, and Shell will appear before the House of Commons Environment Committee. There, they’ll be made to answer for their failure to rein in climate-wrecking emissions — despite reporting record-breaking profits.

As wildfires spread across Canada, this hearing is an ultra-rare opportunity to put the fossil fuel industry on trial for torching the planet. That’s why we need to lean hard on members of the Environment Committee to ask the tough questions about the fossil fuel industry’s climate record. If our efforts pay off, and Big Oil executives stumble under the pressure, it could give legislators leeway to finally crack down on polluting emissions.

Send your MP on the Environment Committee them a letter now, calling on them to put fossil fuel executives to task with hard-hitting questions at tomorrow’s hearing.

Tomorrow, June 6th, executives from Imperial, Enbridge, Cenovus and Shell will appear before the Environment Committee — of which you are a member —  to brief “on their efforts to significantly reduce emissions to meet Canada’s international climate commitments amid their record-breaking profits since 2021.”

As the summer wildfire season begins, Canadians are once again being forced to confront the consequences of the climate crisis. Some of us will have to evacuate our homes; others will lose work; others will suffer from poor air quality.

Meanwhile fossil fuel executives, who are directly responsible for the climate crisis and intensifying wildfire seasons that result, are facing zero consequences for their unlimited pollution. Instead, their emissions continue to grow — as do their lobbying efforts to block climate policies, like the long-promised Emissions Cap, that might stand in the way of their profits.

As an elected representative, you have a duty to represent your constituents’ interests over those of Big Oil. That’s why, when fossil fuel executives appear before the Environment Committee, I call on you to ask one of the following questions: 
1) You have stated your commitment to reducing your emissions in line with the Paris Accord, and yet your sector, via the Pathways Alliance, has spent the last year lobbying to weaken and delay the Federal Government’s Emissions Cap policy — a measure that would increase accountability for the fossil fuel industry to bring down emissions. Will you commit to making no further interventions against the policy? 
2) Studies have shown that emissions produced by fossil fuel companies in Canada are directly responsible for intensifying wildfire seasons. These wildfires already cost Canadians $11 billion a year, a number which can only be expected to rise in future wildfire seasons. But meanwhile, the fossil fuel industry is earning record-breaking profits — $25 billion just in 2023. How do you intend to pay back Canadians for the billions you owe them? 
3) Studies have shown that emissions produced by fossil fuel companies in Canada are directly responsible for intensifying wildfire seasons. But despite this, your emissions continue to rise. What do you have to say about the fact that, as it stands, your industry has no plans to follow through on your commitment to reducing emissions in line with the Paris Accord?
