Call Senate: Don’t rubber-stamp Carney’s “Polluters First” Bill

Here are some talking points — it doesn’t have to be a long message or conversation — even just saying you oppose this Bill C-5 helps build the pressure.

Talking Points:

  • Start by introducing yourself.
  • I’m calling to express my concerns about the Building Canada Act in Bill C-5.
  • We must invest in projects to build the Canadian economy and invest in our future.
  • But puts our future at risk by threatening our environment, our duty to meaningfully consult Indigenous nations, community safety and input, and workers’ rights.
  • Instead of supporting sustainable development, the bill, as proposed, clears the way for large corporations, especially fossil fuel corporations, to cut corners, ignore public input, and push through harmful projects that are not in the public interest.
  • Make these amendments:
    • Ensure that the duty to Free and Prior Consent of Indigenous communities is upheld in this bill
    • Remove the provisions that give broad authority to Cabinet to bypass laws meant to safeguard Canadians, nature, and the climate.
    • Revise the bill to ensure that all projects and assessments comply with—or exceed—the requirements set out in Canada’s foundational environmental legislation.
    • Ensure meaningful public involvement in decision-making: incorporate public participation mechanisms and mandate the Minister to release all relevant information and advice to the public.
  • Please REJECT or please AMEND Bill C-5
