Protect health care and public schools for everyone in Canada
Alberta’s referendum results are still coming in, and some of the results are terrifying. Anti-immigrant sentiment is on the rise, and it is clear that Albertans are deeply divided. The results will give Danielle Smith a mandate to restrict health care, education and other social programs for new immigrants, and that is frightening.
This is happening because immigrants are being scapegoated for chronic underfunding of our social services across Canada. The UCP government and conservative politicians have spent years blaming newcomers for the strain on our hospitals and schools, instead of investing in them.
This is bigger than Alberta; it’s happening all across the country. Once a government decides who doesn’t deserve essential public services, no one’s access is secure. Every child deserves health care and a quality public education.
This is the petition text to decision makers:
We call on governments across Canada to protect universal public access to health care and education by:
- Rejecting any law or policy that restricts essential public services based on immigration status.
- Stopping the scapegoating of immigrants for problems created by underfunding.
- Investing in the hospitals, schools and workers who sustain public services for everyone.
