Doug Ford announced that his government would immediately be repealing its strikebreaking act, Bill 28, in its entirety. [1] Faced with a united labour movement and massive public opposition, Ford backed down.

With Bill 28 repealed, education workers retain their bargaining power, and negotiations can resume. It’s a big win for Charter freedoms and workers’ rights.

But we can’t pack up and go home. A united front of mobilized unions and massive public pressure just forced Ford and Lecce to back down. [2] Now, let’s keep that pressure going and support education workers in their negotiations and get them what they deserve.

I'm writing to you today to acknowledge your government’s doing the right thing and repealing Bill 28, and to remind you that your work is not yet done.

Bill 28 was a huge miscalculation, and a violation of Charter-protected rights. The massive public outcry in response was both justified and inevitable. Make no mistake: Ontario will never stand aside while Charter rights are undermined.

With that corrected, it’s time to get back to work. The events of the past week have shown that schools can’t operate without education workers. Your government has a responsibility to ensure schools stay open safely and stably. The only way to do that is to guarantee essential education workers a livable wage and safe working conditions. They deserve to be able to make ends meet with one job, and all the benefits that come with having stable and secure employment.

I’ve watched your government spend money on pointless lawsuits against a carbon tax, broken clean energy contracts, and refunds for license plate fees. I do not accept your claims of bankruptcy when the evidence makes clear the real problem is fiscal irresponsibility. I expect you to do your job and keep schools open safely, by paying essential workers the money needed to reliably stay in the field and keep them open.

It’s time for you to return to the bargaining table and negotiate in good faith to give education workers the compensation they deserve. The movement your overreach unleashed is just getting started. We will be watching to ensure education workers get the fair contract they deserve.
