UPDATE: March 27, 2020: The Globe & Mail reported that Ottawa is preparing a multi-billion dollar bailout ¹ of the oil and gas sector, and Finance Minister Bill Morneau just confirmed that it could be coming in "hours, possibly days". ²

This is on top of billions of taxpayer dollars that the federal government is about to quietly loan to the failing tar sands Trans Mountain Pipeline and tanker project at the end of March. ³

We have no time to waste to urge the federal government to give economic relief directly to workers and communities -- and not baillout a dying industry or prop up failing pipelines, that would lock us in to many more years of climate destruction. Send a message now.

Dear PM Trudeau and Cabinet,

Oil prices have collapsed to the lowest rate in thirty years, due to COVID-19. At the same time, we're also seeing a global shift away from fossil fuels. This is a signal that it's time to retire our reliance on oil and gas, and begin the transition to a renewable economy.

It is appropriate and necessary for the federal government to make major interventions during COVID19 to keep people safe and healthy, to keep food on our tables and roofs over our heads.

The federal government has the opportunity with this stimulus package to immediately and directly support workers in Alberta and across the country while also investing in what is needed to grow and support a low carbon economy, and the kind of economy that can weather storms. Giving billions of dollars to failing oil and gas companies will not help workers and only prolongs our reliance on fossil fuels.

As a result, I am writing to urge that you invest in workers and communities with your COVID19 stimulus package — not oil and gas corporations.

Instead of providing a bailout to oil and gas companies in the form of share purchases or loan guarantees, the Federal government must create an economic stimulus package that includes:?

- Putting energy workers back to work, with green jobs and training investments, as well as strengthening the EI system and providing a bridge to pensions for workers who require it; 
- Investing in renewable energy, building retrofits, and public transit; 
- Fostering vibrant communities, with economic development and infrastructure for Indigenous communities, as well as those impacted by phasing out oil, gas and coal. 
- - Money for orphan well cleanup should be administered by an independent fund with representation from Indigenous communities, local governments and landowners who can ensure it is used to reclaim wells where the company is bankrupt and its remaining assets have already been spent for this purpose.
