Federal MPs, Minister Guilbeault - Don’t step away from your environmental responsibilities on Highway 413

Doug Ford is bulldozing ahead with his plans for Highway 413, risking habitat destruction, the lives of endangered species, and the health of crucial waterways.

We have seen Ford’s relentless efforts to break down Ontario’s environmental protections. Yet earlier this month, the Federal government caved to Ford's pressure and signed an MOU with Ontario – which Ford is holding up as the green light for the $10 billion project. This MOU removes none of the devastating environmental impacts of Highway 413. In fact, the MOU specifically says that the Federal government does not relinquish any powers within their jurisdiction, meaning Ottawa still holds the power – and obligation – to deny federal permits under both the Species and Fisheries Acts.

It’s clear that Ford will do everything he can to avoid meeting his responsibilities to protect species and rivers in Ontario. Which is why in order to win we have to go over his head.

I am writing to urgently bring attention to the proposed Highway 413 project in Ontario.
This project, being championed by the provincial government, poses a significant threat to our environment and at risk species and waterways. Despite mounting evidence of its potential for irreversible environmental damage, including habitat destruction, endangerment of species, and disruption of waterways, the project continues to move forward.
As elected representatives entrusted with the well-being of our environment, I implore you to intervene and take decisive action to halt the progress of Highway 413.
The MOU you signed last month specifically says that the federal government does not relinquish any powers within your jurisdiction. Which means it is within your power – and remains your obligation – to refuse federal permits for Highway 413, under both the Species Act and the Fisheries Acts. I am asking you to intervene on Highway 413 — to avoid destroying habitat, interfering with species at risk or interfering with waterways, and to ensure that the necessary measures are taken to protect our precious ecosystems.
Your intervention is critical in safeguarding our environment for current and future generations.
